Drummer/composer/producer Michael Baird was born in Zambia, British nationality, resident in Holland. Michael grew up with African music all around him. He is known as an innovative drummer and composer, combining European and African musical concepts, his style became known as ‘Voodoo Jazz’. Baird’s music has been described in the press as ‘disarmingly idiosyncratic’, ‘original down to its innermost fibre’, ‘a world that floats between dreaming and waking’, ‘with complex hypnotic rhythms’, ‘plesantly irksome’, etc. As Baird himself says: “My soup combines jazzy, African and abstract elements – ingredients that may be as old as the world, but it is still my soup!”
