Mariza stars in Carlos Saura movie
The new film Fados, by the Spanish director Carlos Saura, includes performances by the most prominent fadistas of today including Carlos do Carmo, Camané and Mariza. The soundtrack album also includes contributions by those influenced by fado such as Caetano Veloso, Lila Downs, Chico Buarque and Miguel Poveda. As for the film itself Carlos Saura said: “I grew up with fado, with the voice of Amália Rodrigues. For me Fado represents longing, the nostalgia of those who stayed behind in Portugal and for those who left Portugal forever and reminisce about their land of birth.” Fados recalls the memory of such mythic figures as Maria Severa, Armandinho and Amália Rodrigues, while at the same time showing that fado is open to new influences and that in fact, as a genre, it is timeless. It premiered at the San Sebastian film festival in September 2007. Mariza will start recording her new album soon in 2008. It will be produced by the Spaniard Javier Limon, known for his work with Bebel Valdes and Gigala.
